AN AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF AN EMBASSY FROM THE KING OF GREAT BRITAIN TO THE EMPEROR OF CHINA

A rare book, GEORGE LEONARD STAUNTON’S (1737-1801) “An Authentic Account of an Embassy from the King of Great Britain to the Emperor of China”.

LONDON,  1798, in two volumes, signs of wear.

Unfortunately this book does not have the well known  engraved frontispieces  and the engraved maps but it has the engravings within the text and is one of the earliest accounts of China. There is water damage and the corners of one volume are partially missing. Several years ago Christie’s sold a good copy for $ 6,875 and in book sources I now see prices as high as $ 15,000  BUT this copy  has issues and missing plates  and this is reflected in the price.
